FROM THE RUNWAY TO YOUR CLOSET

With a little imagination you can translate your favourite designer runway looks into your personal style.

This segment will give you ideas on selecting styles that can be easily adapted to suit your unique personality.

Dolce & Gabbana

You can create this Dolce & Gabbana look by embellishing a plain dress already in your closet with appliques down the front and on the sleeves.  This design will look fantastic on a black dress with white appliques or red dress with black appliques.  Let your imagination go to work for you.

Lets face it we would all like to be decked off  in designer trends, but our budget will not allow it.  Shopping at consignment stores or even thrift stores is smart and you can purchase designer garbs at a fraction of the cost.

if you are handy with the sewing machine that’s an added bonus.  You can take almost anything and make it into something fab, or you can purchase a garment that’s not your size and adjust it to your personal fit.

I wanted a shirt dress for the summer and could not find what I had in mind.  I took a shirt from my significant other, which was scheduled for the donation bag and inserted some lace trim.  I wear it as a dress or over black tights.  These is no end of what you can create if you are handy with the sewing machine.

Ralph Lauren

Now here’s a very easy style to duplicate.  Most of us have a white shirt in our closet or in our significant other closet.  All you have to do is team it up with a black maxi skirt or black trousers, accessorize with a belt, and choker,  hat is optional, and there you have it a high fashion look.  If you want to be really fancy accentuate with an embellished belt.  A striped shirt  worn with a wrap belt of the same material will also look stunning.

ON ALTERATIONS

If you never became acquainted with the sewing machine, one thing to bear in mind about having alterations done by a tailor or dressmaker is that alterations can be costly, if it’s a simple adjustment ie: lengthening or shortening a garment, then alterations can be considered, however, if a garment requires major alterations, like remodeling, ask yourself these questions, how many times are your going to wear it? does this garment have sentimental meaning for you? or is it a rear item that cannot be replaced? since the cost of alterations can be considerably more than purchasing a new garment.  The reason for the increase costs is because when remodeling, the garment has to be taken apart before the necessary adjustments can be made.  Also remodeling can change the look and fit of the garment.

Remodeling  a garment is a tricky and time consuming operation and a skill that should not be underestimated.  Unless the item that needs alterations has special significance to you, then it is more feasible to purchase a new outfit.

You don’t have to be a couturier to do your own alterations, just learn the basics.  there are sewing classes available,  both online or sit-in classes which ever best suits your needs,  If you love fashion  it will not only save you a fortune in alterations but you can always be decked in the latest trends.

Khaite Resort

Now here’s a no brainer if you have a big shirt in your closet, just add a wide wrap belt of the same or contrasting colour.  You may have to take a trip to the fabric store to purchase fabric for the belt.
